Bryan, indulge my rant, please. “His beautiful wife…..” It's the hundredth time I've seen that phrase and I've just been triggered to express my viewpoint about it.

Why is it that so many descriptions of wives reduce them to “beautiful.” As if that were the most important single word that could be used to describe that human being. It's so patriarchal. So incredibly belittling, IMO.

I'm quite sure it doesn't stand that way for you, you were just following the media's pattern without an awareness of the implications.

Just wanting to call attention to those implications.

Love, OM Bastet

Hello OM,
Sorry if the words Bryan has used (which are mine) have offended you. I'm sitting with my wife and best friend, Lucia, right now. She and I agree there was no belittlement intended in using the word “beautiful.” Her outer form has been 50 years on this planet now and shows signs of a well lived life in the physical world. I was referring to her “inner beauty” and I freely use these words with men and women I know.

May you feel your inner joy, peace and beauty always.

Love,
John

Hey John, I would have expected you were using the term more consciously. I am reacting to a thousand other instances of less-conscious usage, and you happened to be someone available to speak directly to about it. Sorry about that!!

It's part and parcel of the tendency to evaluate women on their outer beauty, not their inner wisdom, skills, knowledge, courage, etc. No politician ever introduced “My wise and courageous wife.” It's partly genetic in our species, beauty supposedly being one bio-marker of a good child-bearer, which is what men are bio-programmed to look for. Unless they raise their consciousness past that.

I'm not offended, exactly, I just want to raise awareness. Perhaps you can refer to “my innerly and outerly beautiful wife,” if you want to help lift our culture out of this pattern.

Thanks so much for getting back to me!! I really appreciate it !!

Hugs, OM
